[Book Blitz] Ruby's Fire by Cathrine Stine: Excerpt + Giveaway

Book Blitz Time Ya'll!!!!!!!

Ruby's Fire by Cathrine Stine
Series: Fireseed #2 (however, can also be read as a stand alone)Publication Date: June 26th, 2013
Genre: YA Sci-fi
Amazon/ Goodreads

Goodreads Synopsis:
If everything about you changes, what remains?

Seventeen year-old Ruby, long-pledged to the much older Stiles from the Fireseed desert cult, escapes with only a change of clothes, a pouch of Oblivion Powder and her mute little brother, Thorn. Arriving at The Greening, a boarding school for orphaned teens, she can finally stop running. Or can she? The Greening is not what it seems. Students are rampaging out of control and as she cares for the secret Fireseed crop, she experiences frightening physical changes. She’s ashamed of her attraction to burly, hard-talking Blane, the resident bodyguard, and wonders why she can’t be happy with the gentler Armonk. She’s long considered her great beauty a liability, a thing she’s misused in order to survive. And how is she to stop her dependence on Oblivion to find a real beauty within, using her talent as a maker of salves, when she has nightmares of Stiles without it?

When George Axiom, wealthy mogul of Vegas-by-the-Sea offers a huge cash prize for the winner of a student contest, Ruby is hopeful she might collect the prize to rescue her family and friends from what she now knows is a dangerous cult. But when Stiles comes to reclaim her, and Thorn sickens after creating the most astonishing contest project of all, the world Ruby knows is changed forever. This romantic fantasy set in 2099 on earth has a crafty heroine in Ruby, and a swoonworthy cast, which will surely appeal to the YA and new adult audience.

Excerpt

This excerpt comes shortly after Ruby escapes a dangerous desert cult armed only with a pouch of her handmade elixir, Oblivion, and her little brother Thorn. They land in a boarding school for nomadic teens, where she’s ensconced in classmate, Bea’s room.

I crawl into bed exhausted in a good way. I’ve eaten, I’ve gotten exercise, and I’ve managed to fend off Blane. I’ve checked on Thorn and Radius seems to be leaving him alone. Bea hasn’t said anything truly nasty to me today, though she’s rolled toward the wall again without a word. Now she’s breathing steadily with a soft snore.
Progress, I may not even need Oblivion tonight.
But as I lay there, staring out at the orange-streaked sky and the distant, blinking stars, my mind sinks to a dreadful reverie. I’m standing in front of the garden shelf where the red leaves are trapped under those wide stones. The Fireseed seems to be emitting a high-pitched wail. Blane is there too and he’s pressing his face into mine, his lips biting at my own lips. His meaty arms trap me. He shoves me down on top of Fireseed stalks that crack and split, sending out more high-pitched whees. As Blane’s weight pushes hard against my chest, his face becomes Stiles’—the flared nostrils, bloodshot eyes and accusing stare. “You are mine,” Stiles says. “How dare you…”
I bolt upright, sending such a flurry of fearful energy into the air that Bea chokes in her sleep. Coughing, she turns my way and returns to her steady breathing.
Her eyes could snap open at any second. She could steal my bag of Oblivion or knock it from my hands, scattering the powder over the floor. It would be lost forever. I hold my breath as I pad across the room, reach for the velvety sack in my cloak and feel the reassuring give of the powder. It’s diminishing with every dose, and I won’t be able to make more here. I need to ration it carefully. My heart hammering, I flutter into the bathroom, inch open the drawstring and shake a line onto my wrist. I inhale greedily, desperately.
Stumbling back to bed, there’s only enough time to thrust the precious bag inside my pillowcase before sweat erupts on my upper lip and my eyes roll up.
Then I bump off swollen ridges of pain as I fall deeply into never.

Book Fashion Monday: The Covenant Series

(photo from styleathome.com)
Hello! Welcome to Book Fashion a weekly Monday meme hosted by ME! As someone who both loves fashion and books I wanted a chance to incorporate both in my blog.
Whenever I am reading book I always imagine what a character would wear just as I imagine facial features or a setting to help the book come to life in my mind :)

So every week I will pick or book or series showcase what I believe the character or characters would wear. This weeks pick is a Alex from a new favorite of mine The Covenant Series (Books 1 and 2) by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Half-Blood (Covenant, #1)
(photo via Goodreads)

About the Book:
The Hematoi descend from the unions of gods and mortals, and the children of two Hematoi pure bloods have godlike powers. Children of Hematoi and mortals--well, not so much. Half-bloods only have two options: become trained Sentinels who hunt and kill daimons or become servants in the homes of the pures. Seventeen-year-old Alexandria would rather risk her life fighting than waste it scrubbing toilets, but she may end up slumming it anyway. There are several rules that students at the Covenant must follow. Alex has problems with them all, but especially rule #1:Relationships between pures and halfs are forbidden. Unfortunately, she's crushing hard on the totally hot pure-blood Aiden. But falling for Aiden isn't her biggest problem--staying alive long enough to graduate the Covenant and become a Sentinel is. If she fails in her duty, she faces a future worse than death or slavery: being turned into a daimon, and being hunted by Aiden. And that would kind of suck. (Add on Goodreads)

About the Character:
Alexandria Andros is the main character of  The Covenant Series. She is a 17 year old half-blood Sentinel-in-training. She's tough, smart and very snarky. And also very much in love with Aiden, a pure-blood.

Workin' it Out

Book Fashion: Alex-The Covenant Series

As a half-blood attend the Covenant who hopes to one day become a sentinel. Alex has to go through a lot of training. Both with Aiden and eventually Seth; another character in the series.

So of course Alex would need to wear something comfortable and easy to move. The ponytail being a sensible hairstyle for training and I added the red sneakers; red being mention in the book as her signature color.

Date with a Pure-Blood

Book Fashion: Alex-The Covenant Series

When she has the chance to sneak out of the Covenant for a party or maybe even a date with a certain off limits pure-blood, Alex likes to show off her more girlie side.

A cute sun dress to show off her shape with some comfortable sandals. she even takes the time to put on a little and jewelry (but not too much!). She doesn't not strike me as the type to fuss over her hair so she goes with her natural hair and she good to go!

The Boys are Back!

The Boys are Back!

So you know I can't forget the totally crush able boys of the series a.k.a Aiden and Seth. I don't have much to say say on this on. Just that I with they were real :)

Sentinels: The Ultimate Bad*#*

Sentinels: The Ultimate Bad*#*

So this is my take on the all black Sentinel uniform. Gender neutral an easy to move. And of course you can't forget you diamon killing weapon.

What do you guys think? Did I get it right? Let me know in the comments!

Review:

The Story

God, its going to hard to write this review without MAJOR vagueness. Mostly because the book is just one GIANT spoiler. But I going to try.

This story had a VERY slow beginning. I'm talking about half the book slow. But it did start to pick up pace with a crazy twist that in hindsight isn't to different from the plot of most post-apocalyptic/dystopian books.

Still I it give me more reason to be interested in the book than how it started, which of course had its purpose.

The Writing

The writing was good. Almost too good at times, if that makes sense. What I mean is most of the characters dialogue was so nicely written, I was kinda like "Who talks like this?", so of it was so intelligent that I couldn't imagine real teenagers talking like that. But obviously that just a minor complaint.

The Characters

For a while I didn't have any feelings toward the MC, Alyssa. She was just...there, I didn't hate her I didn't like her or ANYTHING. And I'm told all these things about her character that are supposed to make her interesting but I need PROOF that its true, you know.

The other characters were more of the same. Nothing that really drew me to them or made me care what happened to them. None of the characters were interesting or engaging really till the end.

The Good

The twist. Even though I probably should have seen it coming it did surprise me. I was about to give up on the book till I got to that part, actually. So it was interesting enough to keep me reading :)

The writing was excellent and very intelligent and engaging.

The Bad

The beginning was SOOOOO SLOW. Usually I forgive this but it took too long to get to the interesting parts. I understand that it takes time to build up a story and the characters but it can't take more than half the book.

The dialogue was a little annoying and hard to read sometimes. Only because I can't imagine teen or someone not in their forty's talking like the characters were talking

The characters held no real interest for me. And great characters is what makes a great book. There was nothing there that lead me to believe that these characters are people that I should invest my time in. Even though I started to like the MC towards the end I still have to talk about the book as a whole and in the beginning I wasn't feeling it.

My Final Thoughts

Despite some of the negative comments I actually did like the book and look forward to the next one. It had the type of ending that made promises for a better second book! Especially now that all the boring stuff is out of the way and we can get down to the great dystopianess. And as for recommendations.... I would recommend it. More so to those who like dystopia.

Tell me if you found the review helpful in the comments section!

(Click on the banner to see the rest of the blog tour schedule)

Marked for Vengeance (The Alyx Rayer Chronicles #1) by S.J. Pierce
Release Date: October 10th, 2012
Publisher: Self-Published
Format: ebook
Pages: 339

Goodreads Synopsis:
Alyx Rayer’s existence in Atlanta, the eternally bustling capital of Georgia, is one of routine and blending in among the worker bees. But her ‘normal’ life is actually a fa├žade for a higher calling; she's a three hundred year old soul, encased in a human vessel and sent from the darkness between heaven and Earth to capture her Marked when summoned by her superiors.

During the initial, routine stake-out of her Marked, a dream prophet named Isaac Walsh, Alyx is thrown for an emotional loop when his allure captivates her heart from two rooftops away. The event marks the very instance when her sense of what’s right and what’s wrong is brutally challenged as her contact with him is strictly forbidden.

While already trapped between honor and desire, her emotional struggles are further challenged by a man in a black suit who continually pops up when she least expects it, his presence evoking a strange response from the scar she was branded with at birth. The scar tingles like a warning beacon, alerting her that something is amiss. Because her superiors never told her what this would mean, or much of anything except what to do when they summon, she can only conclude to try and keep her sanity, and her life, from completely shattering to pieces.

This engaging first book of the series is a Paranormal Romance novel interlaced with twists, turns, and thrilling suspense that is sure to satisfy readers of any genre.

Excerpt
CHAPTER 11: Marked for Vengeance, The Alyx Rayer Chronicles

Isaac zipped the bag closed and rounded the corner to the kitchen, snatching the butcher knife from the counter on his way to the door. When he emerged from behind the cabinets, he halted. Alyx stood in the middle of the living room between the staircase and the sofa, staring through the broken door.
Where’s my son, bitch?!” he barked. Seeing her there was of no surprise to him now, he had almost expected her to show up.
At the sound of his voice, she spun around. He dropped his bag, pointing the knife in her direction to show that he meant business, her frightening appearance not deterring him in the least. Because she had occupied his dreams for so long, this didn’t seem any different.
Her dark, polished eyes studied him intently as her body positioned into a careful stance, like a lioness sizing her opponent – or her prey – anticipating her next move. Fairly certain that his face didn’t reveal it, he now felt hunted and vulnerable. “Hello again, Isaac,” she said with a caginess to her voice that harmonized with her posture.
The feral tone in her words almost unraveled him. “Do you know where my son is?” he asked again and hoped she hadn’t noticed the crack in his voice.
Her eyebrows pinched together as she searched the flat, his question taking her by surprise. “Your son?”
Yes, I have a son! Don’t play around with me,” he said, waving the blade violently through the air.
Why would I know?”
Well don’t you?!”
Her brows pinched tighter. “I wasn’t aware you had one.”
Oh, I’m sure.
She placed one foot in front of the other, carrying her smoothly in his direction, reminding him again of a feline.“Do you know who I am?”
He jutted the knife toward her. “I know that you look like a demon and that your name is Alyx… is that even your name?
Yes,” she said calmly. “But do you know why I’m here?”
She took another indulgent step, and Isaac lunged forward. “I will use this. I’m not playin’ around!”
She fought an amused smile and held up her hands. “I don’t think that will be of much use to you.”
All I want is my son, so if you can’t help me with that you need to get out of my way,” he said, grabbing the bag he had dropped, and marched for the door.
You don’t want to do that,” she warned as she moved into his path.
He stepped around her. “Watch me.”
No, you don’t understand… you don’t want to do that!” she shouted desperately.
He had almost made it there when she gripped his upper arm, pulling him back with the strength of a man three times her size. Clang! The power behind her quick grasping had launched the blade into the wall and onto the concrete floor. He hollered under the vise of her death grip and dropped to his knees.
Oh, Isaac, I’m so sorry!” she cried and released her hold. “I didn’t mean to hurt you. I don’t know my own strength yet.”
He rubbed his throbbing arm as he stood, and when he glared at her, a burning remorse showed in her eyes. She told the truth; his pain upset her. “You care that you hurt me?”
It was a reaction. I’m sorry.”
Isaac’s anger slowly withered away. Maybe he should listen to what she had to say. After all, if she had come to harm him, she wouldn’t be upset over his pain.

[Book Blast] Spring Training by Parker Kincade: Excerpt + Giveaway

He’s got his eye on the ball, but his sights are set on her.

For baseball superstar Garrett Donovan, his contract with the New York Empire baseball team meant he’d finally have the means to secure a future for his family. He should focus on that…not on the sassy, beautiful Jessa Montgomery — or what she looks like naked. Getting involved with the daughter of the Empire’s owner would be career suicide. Jessa is a distraction he can’t afford.

Her father had warned her never to get involved with his athletes, so his request that she keep an eye on his new star player came straight out of left field. The last thing Jessa needs is another spoiled, egotistical ball player to deal with. But Garrett is none of those things. His no-nonsense attitude and smooth Southern charm make her blood burn and her knees weak. Giving into temptation, she is consumed by the pleasure she finds in Garrett’s arms.

Jessa wants to protect his career. Garrett won’t let anything get in the way of their passion.

A passion that could cost him everything.

Strawberries.
You’re such a dumbass.
What the hell was he thinking? If there was one thing every baseball player knew, it was that you didn’t fuck with the owner’s daughter. Ever.
And there he was … talking goddamned condoms and telling her she’d made him hungry.
Jesus Christ.
Garrett scrubbed his hand down his face. He’d heard about the beautiful Jessa Montgomery. From what he’d seen just now, she’d earned every ounce of praise. She was a total knockout. Her hair was a gorgeous shade of blonde and copper, long enough to drape over her breasts. Breasts that weren’t overly large, but perfect to fill his hands.
And her eyes. Garrett bit back a moan. Her eyes were mesmerizing. Not quite blue, not quite green.
But when she started rattling off stats with that voice as smooth as honey, sweet mercy, he’d gone rock hard. Which was damned uncomfortable when his junk was crammed into a protective cup.
Not even his mother could rattle off stats like that and know what they meant. The fact that Jessa understood the game he loved? Fucking. Sexy.
Garrett reached down to adjust himself, hoping to get some relief from the pinch currently nagging his balls.
Two weeks. He’d better chill the fuck out if he was going to survive two weeks with Jessa. Garrett respected the hell out of TJ Montgomery. It was rare for TJ to take a personal interest to the extent he had with him. He still hadn’t figured that one out, but Garrett liked the man. And he needed this job. He had his mom and Leah to worry about. And now little Georgia Grace.
His dad had died years ago, and now that his brother-in-law was gone, Garrett was all they had. The family farm in Mississippi had been his parents’ dream, and Garrett worked hard to make sure it would continue to provide for them. But there was only so much he could do by himself.
Baseball was his ticket to securing a future for his family. He couldn’t afford to screw that up. He had no business thinking about strawberries and wondering if Jessa’s nipples would taste the same as she smelled.
Shit.
Garrett made his way onto the field. He didn’t know what she was getting all bent out of shape about anyway. Even being a few hours later than he’d scheduled, he was still two days early for team practice. If anything, he should be offended about the crack she’d made about him wearing protection. As if he was some kind of man whore.
Ah, if only he’d had that kind of time to waste.
He scanned the growing crowd. He smiled and waved to the fans calling his name. He took in the excitement like the ground soaked up the sun, giving himself a moment to revel in the fact that he was here. All the years of hard work and sacrifice had finally paid off.
“Hey, Donovan!” Garrett turned to see the batting coach signaling him over. “You planning to stand around all day, or you gonna show these folks whatcha got?”
He caught sight of Jessa, already sitting in the first row with her bare feet propped up on the rail. He couldn’t resist stretching his neck to check out her long, lean legs. He cursed as she eased out of the short-sleeved button down, leaving her in a tight top with tiny straps. He wondered how easily those straps would snap if he wrapped his hands around them and tugged.
As if she sensed him watching, her gaze locked on him. Her smile was almost apologetic. Then she laughed and waved her clipboard — her demand for him to get busy.
“Donovan!”

Garrett grabbed his bat and sighed. It was going to be a very long two weeks.
